APPLE VALLEY,CA-Legendary singing cowboys Tex Ritter and Eddie Dean were stars of radio, film, records, TV and personal appearances and heroes to millions of fans from the Saturday matinee era of the 1930’s and 40’s on into the television era.

Both men were born and raised in Texas and their careers were similar in many ways. Tex was born Woodward Maurice Ritter on January 12, 1905 in the little town of Murvaul, TX. Eddie Dean was born Edgar Dean Glosup on July 9, 1907 in the small town of Posey, TX. Both had musical careers on radio before coming to Hollywood in the mid-1930’s. Between 1935 and 1945, Tex starred or co-starred in 60 B-western feature films. Dean appeared in dozens of movies between 1934 and 1945, often as a member of the gang, one of the posse, or part of a group of cowboys singing around the campfire. Many of ...

PRESCOTT,AZ-Congratulations to the all volunteer Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering, Prescott, Arizona, for receiving the 2012 Arizona Governor’s Arts Award for a Community Organization on March 27, 2012. President Jim Buchanan was delighted to accept the award on behalf of the Gathering from last year’s awardee Barbara DuVal Fenster, executive director of Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona.
The Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering, the oldest in Arizona, will celebrate its 25th anniversary on August 9-11, 2012. Its mission is to educate, promote and preserve cowboy poetry, music and western heritage culture and history. of Beloved Employee Doc Stovall
CARTERSVILLE, GA- Mar. 21 – It is with great sadness Booth Western Art Museum shares the news of the sudden passing of Entertainment & Sponsorship Manager Doc Stovall.
Executive Director Seth Hopkins states, “Booth Western Art Museum is so sorry to have lost our long-time friend and employee, Doc Stovall, in a tragic accident this morning. He will be sorely missed.”
A native Virginian, Doc was well known as a Western singer and cowboy poet throughout America, having performed in twenty-five of the fifty states. Honored in 2002 as Georgia’s Official Cowboy Balladeer by the Georgia State Legislature, he entertained audiences both young and old as he strived to keep alive the history of the West in music and song. In November of 2004, Doc was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame, the first cowboy singer so honored, and in October ...

Sam Matisse and many a crew drove through snowstorms, Dallas McCord raced ahead of the storm, and some lucky enough to live nearby, missed the whole thing. But all was worth it when the guitars were tuned, the sound system set, the vendors in place, and the Warrior
Ballroom ready for two full days of some of the best cowboy entertainment around.
Jim Aasen and his wife Linda had a few entertainers over for a great dinner the night before everything was to start, but the jamming began even before dinner was served. That’s where you hear new ideas, blending of voices that haven’t sung together for years, get caught up on families and ranches and the roundup times. And it sets the tone for what’s to come.
Friday morning started off with the next generation of great western entertainers. Elliott

From the first mike check Wednesday, to the final hooraw Saturday, this was a well received, well planned, successful program. There were so many events going on at the Metra Park grounds that it was nearly impossible to attend them all. But one thing folks were talking about was the entertainment stage at the North end of the vendor area in the Rimrock Auto Arena exhibit hall and rodeo arena. This is the same building that lost the roof in a tornado June 20, 2010. The folks responsible have done a remarkable job of rebuilding this arena. Friday evening performers: Host Teresa Kay Orr, Barry Ward, Gale Patzlaff, Chuck Larsen, Bill Barwick.
Saturday Reunion performance: Host Dr. Al Mehl, Paul Larsen, Bonnie Krogman, Marty Blocker, Ken Cook, Janet Parkhurst, Otto Rosfeld, Chuck Parker, Robert Dennis, Willard Hollopeter.
Saturday Evening: Host Lyn Messersmith, Jean Prescott, Mike Logan, Yvonne Hollenbeck,. Brenn Hill.
Chris did good with the trade show and the auditorium was full. Steve reported the Sunday trail ride was down in riders from previous years, but that could be expected when it is raining.

OKLAHOMA CITY,OK-A good crowd was on hand for the annual American Chuckwagon Association meeting at the National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City. Nov. 5, 2011.

Madison Allen from Amarillo gave a nice presentation and also did a terrific job of a miniature chuckwagon and a scene which she had done for school. It was a very impressive job.
She had also cooked with Honey Do Spoiler, which was her inspiration and had a great time. Great to get the young folks involved..
A very good program was presented by David Sneed of Flipping, AR (www.wheelsthatwonthewest.com). He is very knowledgable about everything that concerns wagons and has some great books out. I won’t say he knows “everything”, but he sure comes close. If you’ve got questions about a wagon, he would be the place to start asking questions.
Also, Doug Hansen of Hansen Wagon Works (www.hansenwheel.com) in South Dakota also gave a good presentation concerning ...

HULETTE,WY-It was another sunny beautiful day at Devils Tower on September the 4th, for the 16th annual Cowboy Poetry Gethering. The Park service started this event as a way to say thank you, to the surrounding ranchers and people who live in the area. The performance is held in the shade of the picnic area with people bringing their lawn chairs and lunch and just setting out in nature, enjoying the afternoon. Many families came with the children playing off away from the performance, disturbing no one, yet their parents could still keep an eye on them and enjoy the show.

Robert Dennis has been the event coordinater since the beginning and he takes pride in the fact that all the performers who have ever been there are all still connected to the ranching way of life, either as ...

Pulling out of the huge metropolis of Gene Autry, OK on Saturday morning, Oct. 22, on the way to Fort Worth and the annual Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering, we are constantly amazed at the traffic on I-35. Traveling a little over 70 MPH, the cars went around us like we were sitting still. I was almost tempted to get out and see if we were still moving, but calmer heads prevailed. It used to be a pleasant ride, now it’s like downtown Ft. Worth.

Anyway, crossing the bridge into Texas.
We were stopped to make sure we had our passport and had all our shots. (You can never be too sure about what you might catch there and NEVER drink the water). We continued until the traffic started looking like a parking lot.
They were having an air show at the Alliance Airport. Why folks would go to see air amazes me, but ...

-In every sport, there is one event which stands sout from the other. In baseball, it is the World Series, in football, the Super Bowl, horse racing the Kentucky Derby. In the sport of Ranch Rodeo, it is The Texas Ranch Roundup, the Original and still the best in the world.
Rolling in to Texas, the thermometer tops out about 106, but you know they’re now in an inside airconditioned building, which is a pleasant thought. In the past, you were at an outside arena, hot dusty, but that’s where the cowboys live, but city folks love their comforts so the cowboys accommodate them.
This year, the action was no less than thrilling both nights. In a huge arena, there are few seats to be had and long lines to watch the most historic ranches in Texas fight amongst themselves to see who is best on this weekend.
After the dust had ...
