ALPINE,TX-Over the weekend of February 22-24, 2012, the cowboy poets, storytellers, and musicians gathered in Alpine, Texas, to help celebrate the 27th year of the Gathering. The steering committee members (Lynn Baldwin, Bill Brooks, Don Cadden, Pam Cook, Jane Garrett, Ida Hoelscher, Paul Loeffler, Shelly Rogers, and Nelson Sager) put many long hours into seeing that all the poets and musicians were well cared for with West Texas-sized hospitality. They welcomed all the poets on Thursday evening at the historic Holland Hotel in downtown Alpine. Holland Hotel personnel (Property Manager Carla McFarland, Manager Julie Morton, and Assistant Manager Kevin Chavez) welcomed all of us with graciously with smiles and welcomes as the wait people circulated with delicious hors d’oeurves prepared by Chef Alex Acosta. These appetizers were followed by a spread of Mexican food. This outstanding Poet’s Party was again sponsored by McCoy Building Supply Centers. The mayor of Alpine ...

Albuquerque and the WMA
I just got home from the 2012 awards show in Albuquerque, New Mexico. And wow!! What a weekend! It was so good to see a lot of old friends and meet so many new ones.
On the way out, I got to stop in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and visit with everybody’s friend, singer-songwriter and builder of beautiful guitars, Eddy Harrison. He expressed his regrets for not being able to attend this year’s WMA because his wife is having some serious health problems. He asked me to say “Howdy” to all his friends and I’m sure I missed a few, so read it here!
Of course, the highlight of the weekend for me was the award presentations at the KiMo Theater in downtown Albuquerque. As any one of my grand kids would say, that place is awesome! Built in 1927, at a time when movie-mad communities were constructing ...

GRAND JUNCTION, CO-There’s a saying “You don’t have to be big to be appreciated” Our Grand Junction Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering is a very intimate Gathering. We aren’t one of the big flashy events…and that’s what makes ours all the more endearing. It’s as close a feeling of ‘Sitting around a Campfire’ with friends that you can get..even though it is an inside event.

When you walk through the doors , you are met with a warm rush of friendship and camaraderie. That’s why folks come back, year after year. It truly feels like a family get together, topped off with real fine Cowboy Poetry and Music.
This year, the stage was gifted with a great lineup of Poets and Western Singers.

Park county at one time was replete with gold mines and miners. The first burro race was held in 1949 when a challenge went out for people to race from Leadville to Fairplay. In the 1970s as mines closed down and there were fewer and fewer miners left non miners took up the slack. This year 10 racers ran the long course of 30 miles and 44 the short course of 15 miles. The long course goes over Mosquito Pass and goes from 10000 feet to 13000 feet. The rules read that the burros can be pushed, pulled or carried but not ridden. These photos were taken this year. Recently, I reaped bushels—enough to keep joy in my heart for as long as I remain on top of the grass. I’m speaking of the twenty-seventh Montana Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Lewistown, Montana. There were so many outstanding aspects, it’s difficult to wrap a report in mere words.

To quote one individual who never misses the Gathering, it’s a time to “renew a lot of once-a-year friendships and make new friends as well.” For us cowboy poets and pickers, it’s like a huge family reunion. Howdy’s, handshakes, hugs and kisses aplenty. It’s a three-day soak in a bathtub of warmth.
Two workshops added extra excitement to the Gathering. Darrell Stevenson presented a slide show about establishing the Stevenson Sputnik Cattle Ranch in Russia. Imagine a stretch of ...

©SHERIDAN, WY-LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE
How often do you see thirty to forty grown men wear make-up and dress in wild colors and baggy britches and have a great time entertaining an entire community? It just happened in Sheridan, Wyoming, during their annual Sheridan WYO Rodeo. The Rodeo Clown Reunion came to town and spent all four nights at the rodeo entertaining and visiting, while signing autographs and performing their ‘old acts’. They also were here, there, and everywhere during the parade, which went on for at least an hour and a half. It was as if the whole town of Sheridan went ‘Rodeo Clown Crazy!’ each float, car, boat or trailer was full of people in rodeo clown garb and make-up.
The Rodeo Clown Reunion can give an annual rodeo a ‘shot in the arm’ when thirty to forty colorful rodeo clowns hit town and not only attend the rodeo but ...
